Welcome to The Woodlands Centre
Located in the rural town of Wem in Shropshire and enriched in history, The Woodlands Centre accommodates the Woodlands Specialist School and the Woodlands Outreach Service, with our Acorns key stage 2 provisions located in Oswestry and Bishop's Castle.
With a £2.2 million investment, transformation from the previously known “Trench Hall School” to the purpose built Woodlands Centre was completed and opened in November 2003.
We hope our website will give you a feel for the nature and scope of The Woodlands Centre, it is not however a substitute for a visit in person as words and pictures cannot do full justice to the quality or extent of the facilities and of course the view of the surrounding countryside.
The Woodlands School is a Shropshire Local Authority (LA) Specialist School catering for pupils aged eleven to sixteen who have Special Educational Needs (SEN), specifically Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH).
The school has facilities for and can accommodate up to 56 statemented boys and girls with EHC plans on a non-residential basis.
Children are admitted from year seven, up to a maximum of eight in each year group, with our Acorns provision admitting from year five. Each group is usually taught by one teacher and one Special Support Assistant. The high staff to pupil ratio within classrooms is recognition that pupils coming to Woodlands School have a range of learning, emotional and behavioural difficulties which require a significantly higher level of support.
Woodlands Outreach offers two services for schools.
Our Advisory teachers and specialist practitioners offer outreach support for pupils who may present signs of Social Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH), Autistic Spectrum (AS) or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
This fully traded service provides support, advice, assessment and training for schools, pupils, parents and other agencies in Shropshire and surrounding areas.
Woodlands Outreach has the inclusive agenda at its heart ensuring wherever possible that children remain educated in a mainstream setting.
Our ICT department offer an onsite technician service for local primary schools. Providing a wide range of onsite technical support, professional impartial advice and consultancy.
Our Acorns Centres are satellite provisions of Woodlands School based in Oswestry and Bishop's Castle.
The provision offers primary education to a group of up to 12 pupils from years 5, 6 or 7. The whole curriculum is covered with daily input of Maths and English together with an opportunity to experience activities such as horticulture which, with a cross curricular approach, gives practical experience of Science, Maths and English and also builds personal and social skills.
