Literacy

English

At Woodlands English is taught at both national curriculum key stage 3 and key stage 4 levels. All pupils are assessed upon entry to identify their current working level and identify their areas for development. This helps us to tailor their English education to their individual needs. Pupils are assessed three times a year for reading, spelling and comprehension in order to give them focused targets to help them access all areas of the curriculum.

Key Stage 3

Speaking and Listening – we do this individually, in groups and in role. This is where pupils demonstrate their ability to speak effectively, using Standard English and a wide vocabulary. They also learn to listen closely and respond appropriately to others through questioning.

Reading – we read fiction (poetry, prose and drama) and non-fiction. Pupils will enjoy whole class reading of novels, plays and poems, where they will be encouraged to think actively about how the texts work and the effects they can have on the reader. Classes will explore possible meanings and examine techniques used by writers for specific purposes. Pupils will also study non-fiction texts such as leaflets, brochures, websites, advertisements, newspaper/magazine articles, reviews and letters. As above, they will be taught to examine these texts and explore how they achieve their purpose and suit their target audience.

Writing – we create fiction and non-fiction writing. Pupils will learn to write accurately and effectively. They are taught how to use Standard English spelling, punctuation and grammar and encouraged to apply this to their writing to make it effective. They are also taught techniques of writing and how to match their style of language to purpose and target audience

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 pupils work towards the new Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualification. Key Stage 4 pupils also work towards, and sit, Functional Skills Exams at the appropriate level. Our aim is to help pupils achieve both level 1 and 2 Functional Skills before entering Post-16 education.

The GCSE courses provide pupils with access to a broad range of texts from the literary canon, building on their knowledge from Key Stage 3.

Literacy Intervention

Woodlands School is committed to improving the outcomes of all pupils, with this we have developed a robust program to improve Literacy across all years, and across all areas of the curriculum. Currently we have four HLTAs who deliver expert intervention to pupils using a range of materials and strategies.
