Head of Centre’s Welcome

Welcome to the Woodlands School. Thank you for taking time to look around our website and getting to know a little bit more about what we do here.

I was appointed as head teacher in January 2001 when the school had extremely poor facilities and accommodation.  I was excited at the opportunity to be involved in the development of the new school, now called Woodlands, at the design stage.  Woodlands has purpose built facilities and strives to be at the leading edge of innovation and technology.  The school aims to provide a wide range of curricular opportunities including academic qualifications but also a range of enrichment activities which will ensure that all pupils’ needs and interests are nurtured and developed. We are committed and focused on preparing our pupils for the successful transition from school to the life beyond including further education, training and work.  Key to this is the development of the necessary skills and attitudes that will enable them to be successful within the community and remove the barriers to their learning.

Woodlands school is one of only two maintained special schools in Shropshire.  We cater for pupils with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties (SEBD).  All pupils who attend Woodlands have a Statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN).  We aim to make a real difference in the lives of those pupils and families which we have the pleasure to support and develop.  Admissions are strictly controlled by the Local Authority (LA) who ensure that pupils who are admitted to the school will gain maximum benefit from specialist placement.

Finally, after a two day Ofsted inspection in April 2015, our report has been published and it was deemed that we are a “Good” school which is a great acknowledgment of the progress we have made – a great achievement all round.  The hard work we have been putting in and continue to put in shows what a good school we are and highlights how positive it is for our pupils, how it makes a difference to their lives both during and after leaving Woodlands.  As always, the Governors and staff are fully committed to making further improvements on our road to “Outstanding” to ensure that every pupil thrives and achieves appropriate to their ability.

As a school we pride ourselves on willingness and effort to communicate effectively with all parents.  We recognise that many parents have had a difficult journey through the education system and we seek to be approachable and supportive at all times.  Please feel free to contact us to discuss any issue or concerns that you have.
